Relief from snoring for a good night’s sleep

A variety of oral devices or mouthpieces are now available to help address your snoring problems. These durable appliances are created from impressions taken of your teeth, so they fit snugly. By preventing the lower jaw from dropping back during sleep, these devices can prevent the closure of your airways, which will stop you from snoring.

Your dentist here in York can fit one of these custom-made oral devices for you, so you and those around you can look forward to a more restful sleep.

I have been with this practice for many years, had really bad toothache this week, was fitted in very quickly. All the staff were very kind and efficient but special thanks to my dentist Andrew for his patience sorting out my stubborn tooth, great to be pain free, thank you so much.

What is Snoring?

Snoring is caused by the vibration of soft tissues in the throat and behind the tongue. If you’re a snorer, you are not alone. Studies suggest that at least 30% of all adults snore. It can be a major factor in sleep disturbance and stress, leading to lack of energy, poor concentration, mood swings, and irritability. In the long-term, snoring can also lead to health concerns including high blood pressure and heart problems.

What is Sleep Apnoea?

With Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) an increase in weight or a reduction in muscle tone can trigger the change from a partially blocked airway (snoring) to a completely blocked airway. Sufferers are often completely unaware of the disorder, and remain undiagnosed for several years. OSA has been linked to an increased risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease.

How the treatment works

Your dentist will take impressions of your teeth, to enable a mouth piece to be custom-made to fit you precisely and comfortably.

Made from a hard wearing plastic, the mouthpiece should be worn at night or while you are sleeping. It works by holding your bottom jaw in a slightly forward position.

This opens up your airway, helping you to breathe more easily. This stops the soft oral tissues from vibrating and helps prevent disruptive snoring.
